Transportada en el vapor "Cantabria", que al mismo tiempo trasladaba a las tropas del Ejército Expedicionario Español con destino a Veracruz, se da la circunstancia de que el vapor, de la Compañía Antonio López, naufragó en las costas de La Gomera (embarrancado), la tripulación, pasajeros, correo y resto de mercancías, fueron recogidos por un buque de guerra ruso, el Rinde, que los trasladó a Santa Cruz de Tenerife, desde donde continuarían el trayecto en otro barco procedente de Cádiz.
